PETA to protest against bull fights in Tamil NaduNew Delhi, Jan 4 - Activists of animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)-India will Monday stage a protest in the capital against bull fights held in Tamil Nadu as part of Pongal celebrations. "PETA-India will stage a protest near Tamil Nadu House at 12 p.m. Monday. Bull fight events are illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which clearly prohibits causing suffering to any animal," Manilal Valliyate, PETA-India's director of veterinary affairs, said. The 'jallikattu', which is a bull taming sport, is organised across Tamil Nadu on the second day of the harvest festival Pongal. A statement by PETA-India said that last year two people were killed and 215 people sustained injuries in bull fight events in the state. "Terrified bulls are painfully dragged by nose ropes, surrounded by mobs of taunting people who send the animals into a frenzy, goaded with sticks and pushed and wrestled to the ground," the statement added. -IANS Please Share this article with your friends.
